Terminal District layout 1997 - 2001

For several years I had my two Ntrak modules set up with 3 other sections to create a 12 ft x 3 ft layout along 1 wall of my train room. The theme of the layout was the Alameda corridor of Los Angeles in the 1960's. The layout was 39 high above the floor. While it was great for sitting in a chair and running trains, it was difficult to reach to the rear of the layout.

Late in 2001 I decided to dismantle this layout and start the California North Western as a shelf layout in the same space. In addition to enjoying better ergonomics, I now have room for a desk and file cabinet plus space to store my modules. The theme of the old layout lives on with the 2 Ntrak modules which are still developing and are used in layouts of the Peninsula Ntrak club. These photos are from parts of the layout that don't exist anymore.
This was Hawkeye who spent many happy hours watching the trains and keeping me company. He is also no longer around having passed away in 2000 at the age of 17.
At the south, or right end of the layout was the Delores Yard engine terminal.

The main yard office building and warehouse that I scratchbuilt from photos of the actual Delores Yard office building and warehouse is now part of the refinery complex on one of the Ntrak modules.
Also at the south end of the layout was a junkyard. All the parts were saved and were used to create a similar scene on one of my Ntrak modules.
At the left or north end of the layout downtown LA as simulated with backdrops and a few larger buildings. Track had been laid in the street for a non-operating trolley line. I hope to incorporate some of these features into my Ntrak modules as well.
Here is a closer view of the DPM building that I built to be a surplus store. This was the most completed building on this section of the layout. I used the back wall as a side wall to give the building a greater depth.
In the corner of the downtown end of the layout I kitbashed a Walthers Redwing Milling kit.

This was a nice building but I couldn't find anywhere else to use it so it was later sold on ebay and hopefully found a good home on another layout.
Another Walthers kit on one of the Ntrak modules was this Medusa Cement storage structure. This was later removed and today the refinery is on this site.
